Didima

Near Didyma on the Argolis peninsula.
From Nafplio main road to Epidauros. 1km before ancient Epidauros turn right to the south. Good road to Didyma. At the town turn right at signs.
From the south (Pórto Chéli) 24km north on the national road, turn left at Didyma. The big doline is eas to see from the south.
500m paved road to the parking.

THE CAVE OF DIDYMA

On the slope of the mountain, northwest of the village of Didyma ,one can admire a huge depression of the ground which is called Megali Spilia (The Big Cave) by the local people. A smaller one which is not visible is Mikri Spilia (the Small Cave). Both of them were created after a landslide.
According to the archaeological finds Megali Spilia was inhabited during the late neolithic era.

One can visit the church of Agios Demetrios of the 11th century A.D. Also, the church of Agios Giorgios of the 13th century and the country church of Metamorfossi tou Sotira (Transfiguration of the Saviour ) in Mikri Spilia.
During the Hellenic War of Independence in 1821 , according to the legent, Dimitsanites carried nitre from Megali Spilia for making gun powder.

The peculiar shape of the Cave can impress the visitor and kindle the imagination of the tourist.

THE MONASTERY OF AVGO

The Monastery of Avgo is siruated on the north west of the village Didyma and it is built on the north slope of the mountain Avgo.

The Monastery belongs to the Byzantine antiquities of the area. On the north part of the mountain one can notice the remnants of ancient castles and medieval buildings. The loopholes in the cavities of the rock make the monastery look like a castle.

On the south there is the church of Agios Demetrios built in the 11th century. It is worth visiting the church of Agios Georgios in Mikri Spilia and admire the frescoes of the 13th century as well as the small country church of Metamorfosi tou Sotira.

The Monastery played an important role during the Hellenic War of Independence in 1821.The Archimandrite Dionysios fought against the Turks as a soldier in the army of Arsenios Krestas , known as Paparseni.
